The Merrie Monarch Festival is a cultural event that starts from Easter Sunday morning to Saturday evening. It takes place annually in Hilo, Hawaii and is in honor of King David Kalākaua, the last king of the Kingdon of Hawaii. He was called the “Merrie Monarch” and was known for restoring many Hawaiian cultural traditions during his reign, which included the hula. The festival has received worldwide attention and is considered the most prestigious of all hula contests.
