The gecko was deeply respected by ancient Hawaiians, because of its resemblance to the great lizard being, mo’o. These tiny reptiles were known as guardian spirits, or aumakua, along with the shark, the owl, and the hawk. They were the protector of homes and it was said they could communicate to the gods. Today’s geckos can still be found around all island homes, protecting them from other pests.
